Currently Belgium dose not have any territories but during the colonial period their most notable colony was the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Belgium abused their power over the Congo eventually leading them to independence. They also controlled Rwanda and are responsible for separating Rwandans into the Hutu and Tutsi groups, which led to the Rwandan genocide in the 1990's.

Type of Government
A. Belgium's government is a Federal Parliamentary Democracy under a Constitutional Monarchy. Which means that there is a King who has control with checks and balances from a parliament elected by the people. The parliament is what votes on the laws and other items on the Belgian political agenda.
B. The leaders are the King who is the Chief of State and the Prime Minister who is the leader of the parliament.
C. The branches of the government are the Executive, which is composed of the King and The Prime Minister. They oversee the entire governmental system and deal with internal and foreign affairs. Legislative, which consists of a bicameral parliament. They vote on laws and other issues brought up during sessions. Judicial or the High Courts which have 12 judges, 6 French speaking and 6 Dutch speaking. They are the highest court in Belgium and take up cases that have been ruled upon and appealed from the lower courts.
D. Their are three regional governments in Belgium. The Brussels region, The Flemish region, and The Walloon region.
E. Power in the government is shared by allowing the different branches to keep each other in check. Laws are created by bring them to parliament as a proposition and then to the executive branch. Representatives in parliament are voted on by the Belgian people once every 5 years and these elections coincide with the EU's elections. The leader of the majority group in Parliament is chosen by the king to be Prime Minister. The monarchy is hereditary, which mean it is by goes down the family line by the oldest child.

The EU is a cooperation of many European states that makes trading easier within Europe. NATO (Military) is an organization of military powers in the North Atlantic region dedicated to military peace. Which Belgium was also a founding member of is also headquartered in Brussels Belgium; The UN (Political) is an organization of sovereign states that work together to improve peace on earth. Belgium was also a founding member of the UN and remains a strong voice in the UN on topics such as human rights, conflict prevention, and peace keeping.
